Our School
Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen is housed in a truly fabulous new building that opened its doors to students in September 2013. Key design concepts in the building, such as transparency and flexibility, fully support what we are doing in terms of removing barriers to learning and changing the culture. The culture that we are building together is that of a modern, twenty first century learning environment, where 1700 people come to work together, for a common goal, some of whom happen to be adults, and some of whom happen to be young people.
The building itself was designed by Scott Brownrigg and the main construction contractor was Leadbitter, Davis Langdon, Jubb and Arup. The school is, we believe, the first of its kind in the UK to win the much coveted BREEAM outstanding award, issued by the Building Research Establishment, for environmental sustainability.
The sporting facilities are excellent and include a four court Sports Hall, grass rugby and football pitches, the latest 3G pitch, another all weather pitch, a Multi Use Games Area as well as tennis courts.
Internally, the school is characterised by the design that allows for passive supervision, maximum visibility, flexibility and the creative use of space. The design provides spaces for individual work, small group work, class groups, and groups of up to 90 learners.
