The Physical Education Department at Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen is a very forward thinking and innovative department that offers all students a wide range of opportunities for sporting achievement and academic attainment.  The department is staffed by 7 full-time specialist teachers.  All teachers possess excellent subject knowledge in addition to a range of outstanding sport specialisms.

Extra-curricular Activities:

The PE department offers a wide range of competitive and recreational extra-curricular activities, which take place at lunchtime and after school.  Throughout the year, these extracurricular activities include:

Hockey (indoor & Outdoor), Netball, Rounders, Rugby, Football, Basketball, Dodgeball, Badminton, Cross-country, Athletics, Table Tennis, Dance, Street Dance, Rock Climbing, and an annual adventurous / sport specific Trip.  This selection is updated throughout the year.  The department also organise and run activities through the 5 x 60 programme which gives students the opportunities to take part in alternative sport and exercise activities, as well as offer students the chance to use various sporting provisions in the local community.

Recent Successes:

A number of our students are very successful sports-people, representing district, regional and national sides in a wide range of sporting activities.  A number of our teams also enjoy considerable regional success.

Our BTEC national results are consistently outstanding, achieving much higher grades than the national average.

Our GCSE results are pleasing and our students receive regular additional revision classes to support them in achieving their maximum potential.

We are very proud that many of our students go on to study further sport courses in higher education such as physiotherapy, sports event management, sport technology and teaching.
