Subject Overview:

Design and Technology

Design and Technology at KS3 is delivered to fulfil the requirements of the curriculum, with a focus on developing our learners into enterprising, capable contributors who can solve problems and create products that improve society.

We encourage a mix of practical and theory-based learning to help learners develop sound subject knowledge, building the confidence needed to begin our GCSE courses.

We have several purpose-built workshops for working with wood, metal, and plastic, as well as a CAD suite for designing, and CAM facilities including laser cutting and 3D printing.

Learners in KS3 begin to understand the needs and wants of users that drive the development of new products. They also improve their 3D drawing skills and creativity within design work. Learners are taught to evaluate their work thoroughly in order to improve, as part of an iterative design cycle. Practical experiences include woodwork, metalwork, and manipulating plastics.

We place strong emphasis on developing ethical, informed citizens by considering sustainability in the use of raw materials, energy consumption, and the life cycle of products.

At KS4, we offer Product Design and Engineering, and many learners choose to study both. Each course includes a significant coursework component, with products manufactured in school and portfolios of design work or engineering evidence developed. We run regular after-school sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays to support our GCSE and A level learners with coursework, providing dedicated help and advice.

The Food and Nutrition department sits alongside Design and Technology, while also championing the values of our Health and Well-being Area of Learning. Learners use our fully equipped kitchens, including a catering kitchen, to produce healthy and nutritious dishes.

We offer learners an exciting and challenging experience across the whole department, where they can develop essential life skills, knowledge, and the understanding needed to succeed in higher education and the world of work.

We have high expectations for behaviour and achievement, and we strive for each learner to reach their full potential in this subject. We embrace a “Teach to the Top” mindset to ensure every learner is both challenged and supported to make progress.
