Subject overview

In the Food and Nutrition department at CCYD School, students learn valuable life skills that help them make informed choices about food, health, and safety. This subject is taught by experienced and professional staff who are passionate about food education and helping students succeed in and out of the kitchen.

A big focus of the course is learning how to stay safe in the kitchen. Students are taught how to use equipment correctly, follow hygiene rules, and prevent accidents. They also learn how to store, prepare, and cook food in ways that avoid food poisoning and cross-contamination.

Another key part of the course is learning about healthy eating. Students explore what makes a balanced diet and how different nutrients affect the body. They look at the impact of food choices on physical health and well-being, as well as on the environment and wider society.

Food and Nutrition at CCYD is a very hands-on subject. Students take part in regular practical cooking lessons where they prepare both sweet and savoury dishes. These lessons help to build essential skills such as measuring, chopping, mixing, and cooking using a variety of methods. Recipes are chosen to build confidence and give students the chance to be creative.

As they move through the course, students are encouraged to plan their own dishes, adapt recipes, and evaluate the outcomes. This helps them grow into independent, skilled cooks who understand the importance of nutrition and food safety.

Whether you’re aiming for a career in the food industry or simply want to cook well for yourself and others, Food and Nutrition at CCYD gives you the knowledge and skills to thrive.
